Housing deal in works Brunswick council to review proposal for former military homes By Darren Fishell Brunswick Times Record November 4, 2011BRUNSWICK - The Brunswick Town Council will take a first look Monday at a proposed land deal between the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority (MRRA) and a company owned by developer George Schott, who purchased former military housing units affiliated with Brunswick Naval Air Station.
Schott's Affordable Mid-Coast Housing (AMH) owns 702 housing units - on six tracts in Brunswick and one tract in Topsham. However, AMH does not own the land beneath those residential units, because the Navy retained the land while leasing the buildings to a private contractor prior to the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure commission's vote to close BNAS.
As part of the base closure process, MRRA acquired the land via a conveyance from the Navy. Since the land transfer became official, Schott and redevelopment officials have negotiated terms of an agreement that would link ownership of the land and the homes, which would allow for the eventual sale of those homes.
