Ft. Meade to remove trash from landfill Old household waste leaks methane into soil By PAMELA WOOD Annapolis Capital (MD) September 19, 2011More than eight years after a landfill was discovered near homes and a school at Fort George G. Meade, a contractor is planning to remove some of the trash.
By the end of the year, contractor Arcadis expects to excavate trash from about one acre of the 10-acre site. The trash is old household waste that is leaching potentially dangerous methane gas into the soil.
Members of Fort Meade's Restoration Advisory Board - a panel that reviews ongoing cleanup efforts - got the first details of the trash removal at their bimonthly meeting Thursday.
All told, 7,200 cubic yards of trash will be removed and taken to a landfill, said Tom Crone, a representative from Arcadis.
