Polluted Cape Cod military base hits cleanup milestone By George Brennan Cape Cod Times (MA) July 21, 2011CAMP EDWARDS - Military and environmental regulators have agreed on a plan to clean up an area of the Upper Cape military base once used for weapons testing and artillery training.
A 30-day public comment period begins Monday and a public hearing is scheduled for Wednesday to discuss two plans proposed by the Army's Impact Area Groundwater Study Program for an area known as the Central Impact Area. One plan deals with removing some of the remaining sources of the contamination, and the other proposes to pump and clean a groundwater plume polluted with perchlorate and Royal Demolition Explosive, also known as RDX.
The plans mark a major milestone in the massive cleanup at the Massachusetts Military Reservation because the proposals represent a way to deal with the last, biggest area of contamination. The military concentrated its initial efforts on finding solutions to begin the cleanup of contamination migrating outside the base boundaries into neighborhoods in Falmouth, Sandwich, Bourne and Mashpee.
