AVX appeals federal pollution ruling

Electronics parts maker AVX Corp. will appeal a federal judge’s ruling that the company is entirely responsible for environmental cleanup costs at land adjacent to its Myrtle Beach manufacturing site.

Judge Terry Wooten ruled in May that AVX must pay all of the costs -- estimated at $6 million -- to clean trichloroethylene, or TCE, from groundwater at property along 17th Avenue South that used to be owned by Horry Land Co.

That property is part of a 10-block Myrtle Beach neighborhood where groundwater has been contaminated with TCE that migrated from the AVX facility.

AVX had claimed in a lawsuit that the federal government was responsible for some of the pollution because the military used TCE on the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, which was located near the contaminated site.
