New Tests Find Chemical Traces in Wells By John Fleck Albuquerque Journal (NM) May 14, 2011New signs of contamination have been found in three drinking water wells adjacent to a jet fuel spill at Kirtland Air Force Base, Air Force officials said Friday.
The contamination, in wells used to provide drinking water to the Air Force Base and adjacent VA hospital, is at trace levels, far less than the amount that would pose a health threat to water users, Air Force officials said in a Friday morning news release.
But the finds raise the possibility that contamination has traveled deeper into Albuquerque's ground water than previously believed, said University of New Mexico engineering professor Bruce Thomson, head of UNM's Water Resources Program.
"I agree with the press release that public risk is still very low, but it just went up by a whole bunch," Thomson said.
