Landfill-cap plan at Rickenbacker worries Lockbourne residents Toxins too dangerous to stay there, they say BY SPENCER HUNT The Columbus Dispatch May 4, 2011A plan to clean up hazardous waste that the military buried in an old landfill at Rickenbacker Airport doesn't do enough to protect area residents and groundwater, Lockbourne village officials say.
From 1951 through 1979, garbage and other waste was routinely dumped on the ground and in open trenches dug in a 105-acre woods along the western edge of the former Lockbourne Air Force Base.
A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers analysis of that landfill, discussed during a public hearing on April 28 in Lockbourne, detected hazardous concentrations of toxic metals, compounds and PCBs in the soil and groundwater.
