Dismantling of a Silicon Valley landmark: Hangar One demolition begins

It wasn't visible from the ground Thursday, but 200 feet up in the air the dismantling of an icon had begun.

Over the next several months, workers will remove the walls and roof of Hangar One at Moffett Field until all that's left is the historic structure's skeletal frame.

While NASA intends to restore the hangar and replace its siding, many of those who have fought for years to preserve the massive building are worried that may never happen and lament the loss, at least temporarily, of a Silicon Valley landmark.

Watching the walls come down will be "very painful" for Bob Moss, a member of the Moffett Field Restoration Advisory Board, the group that has been working on a solution for the aging hulk with the Navy and NASA Ames since they learned nine years ago it was leaking toxins into the ground.
