Va. Beach aims to get back funds to buffer Oceana By Deirdre Fernandes The Virginian-Pilot March 13, 2011VIRGINIA BEACH - City leaders have mobilized to persuade state lawmakers to restore $7.5 million in next year's state budget for a program to purchase property around Oceana Naval Air Station.
Mayor Will Sessoms and Adm. John C. Harvey Jr., head of the U.S. Fleet Forces Command, plan to meet with Senate Majority Leader Richard Saslaw, a Northern Virginia Democrat. City officials have asked U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, a Democrat, and U.S. Rep. Scott Rigell, a Republican, to call hesitant state lawmakers and stress the importance of the money.
In addition, the city's business leaders have sent letters to Gov. Bob McDonnell urging him to fund the program and encourage legislators to approve it when they return in April to consider any budget amendments the governor makes.
