A BRAC for federal buildings By ANDY MEDICI Federal Times March 7, 2011 The next target for government cost-cutting may be your office building. The Obama administration plans to assemble soon an independent panel to identify excess federal properties that can be sold and underutilized facilities that can be consolidated.
The panel would be modeled after past base realignment and closure (BRAC) commissions that planned large-scale consolidations and closures of military bases.
The administration is pressing Congress to approve the panel to start work "as soon as possible," an Office of Management and Budget spokeswoman said.
The government owns 14,000 excess buildings and 55,000 underutilized buildings. The Obama administration estimates it can save $15 billion in three years by quickly shedding excess properties and consolidating ones that are underutilized. The dollar figure - which translates to $5 billion a year - includes saved maintenance, operations and energy costs as well as proceeds from sales.
