Reactions from relief to concern are rippling through the region after the Navy announced last week that it had stopped all work related to an East Coast Outlying Landing Field until at least 2014.

Eastern North Carolina residents, business people, politicians and the military have spent nine years either fighting or supporting a Navy attempt to find a large, remote site in reasonable proximity to Cherry Point and Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, Va., where pilots can practice aircraft carrier landings.

The Navy suspended OLF work on Thursday, citing the need for basing and training requirements of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter to be better defined.
