BRUNSWICK - Bowdoin College promoted ambitious plans for expansion Friday - including new athletic fields and an environmental studies complex - with news that the school cleared a major milestone in its pursuit of 259 acres that are now part of Brunswick Naval Air Station.

The college announced Friday it has received final approval from the U.S. Department of Education for its request to acquire, at no cost, three parcels on the western side of the base after the Navy installation closes next year.

Brunswick Naval Air Station is scheduled to close as an active military installation by May 2011, after which the 3,200-acre property will be made available for civilian redevelopment under the name Brunswick Landing.
