Long Beach, feds agree on seawall alteration study

LONG BEACH - What began years ago as a fringe movement to alter or even tear down the Long Beach Breakwater is a step closer to reality following a formal agreement with the federal government.

The city, backed by dozens of the same activists who began the "Sink the Breakwater" campaign in the 1990s, signed an $8 million agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to conduct a four-year study on the impact of altering the 2.5-mile rock seawall.

The goal, as Army Corps of Engineers Col. Mark Toy said Tuesday, is to "restore much of the natural environment that existed in previous years," before the rock barrier blocked wave action and contributed to growing water pollution problems.
