Base cleanup achieves milestone By George Brennan Cape Cod Times November 8, 2010FALMOUTH - The federal cleanup of pollution in and around the Massachusetts Military Reservation reached a significant milestone last week when workers started dismantling some wells no longer needed in the Hatchville section of town.
The Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment started work Wednesday removing 204 shallow extraction well points installed more than a decade ago, spokesman Doug Karson said. The wells were set up to prevent ethylene dibromide (EDB), an additive found in aviation fuel, from upwelling into the Coonamessett River and bog areas south of Hatchville Road, he said.
The pollution is from what is known as Fuel Spill 28 - one of several contaminated plumes at the base that extends beyond the Upper Cape base's boundaries.
