Officials: Camp Lejeune monitoring chemicals in groundwater HOPE HODGE Jacksonville Daily News (NC) October 28, 2010Marine officials told The Daily News Tuesday that they acknowledge the presence of toxic chemicals in the soil aboard Camp Lejeune and have mechanisms in place to mitigate risks to base workers and residents.
According to a 300-page report released by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry Friday detailing the extent and location of contamination from leaks and incorrect disposal practices, volatile organic compounds including the dry cleaning solvents TCE and PCE and the known carcinogen benzene remain in the soil and groundwater on base, though the drinking wells contaminated with these chemicals were long ago taken offline.
...One risk of these chemicals remaining in soil and groundwater is vapor intrusion, a process by which volatile compounds become gases and migrate up the soil column by diffusion, occasionally forcing their way into nearby buildings. This happened in Hadnot Point as recently as 1999.
