Air Force transfers final piece of former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base
Myrtle Beach Sun News October 1, 2010The U.S. Air Force transferred 2.4 acres, the final piece of former Myrtle Beach Air Force property it owned, to Horry County, it announced today.
The land is the last to be transferred because it took additional time to clean up the land and bring it up to environmental requirements set by state regulators and the Environmental Protection Agency, said Armando Perez, a public affairs officer for the Air Force Real Property Agency.
The base, which sat on almost 4,000 acres, closed in 1993 and the Air Force has been cleaning up the land since then. All the land has now been transferred to a combination of organizations including the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base Redevelopment Authority, Horry County and the City of Myrtle Beach.
