Congressional hearing examines past, future of Camp Lejeune toxic water vets

Jacksonville Daily News (NC)
September 15, 2010

Peter Devereaux has it in writing: The two years he spent stationed at Camp Lejeune is the best explanation for the breast cancer that is killing him.

Jim Watters has similar assurance of the cause of his terminal kidney cancer: A letter from the Department of Veterans Affairs grants him 100-percent disability and lists the cause of his illness as exposure to contaminated water from the base.

Both Devereaux and Watters will appear before the U.S. House Science and Technology Committee this morning, part of a panel of veterans and experts discussing the decades since the Marine Corps discovered high concentrations of degreasing chemicals and dry cleaner solvents in the drinking water of several Camp Lejeune neighborhoods in 1981 and 1982.

Close to 30 years later, new revelations about the extent of the contamination, the content of the water and the toxic properties of the chemicals involved are still coming to light. In the past year alone, documents indicating a large fuel leak in the Hadnot Point region of Camp Lejeune that dumped the carcinogen benzene into the water supply have received public attention.
