Kelly chemical results now set for year's end By Tony Cantu San Antonio Express (TX) August 19, 2010Residents living near the former Kelly Air Force Base — many of whom have come down with mysterious illnesses they blame on chemical seepage in surrounding groundwater and soil — had expected recently to hear the results of a sediment study centered on nearby Leon Creek.
An Aug. 3 meeting at Cuellar Community Center at 5626 San Fernando had been billed as one in which the results of a sediment study of lower Leon Creek would be released, according to the office of U.S. Rep. Charles Gonzalez. Hosted by the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District's Public Center for Environmental Health, the meeting featured a hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.
Instead, officials announced study results would now be released by year's end. For residents in the shadows of Port San Antonio – the 1,800-acre industrial park being developed after Kelly closed in 2001 — the lack of results came as no surprise.
