Veteran files suit in son's death By NATALEE SEELY Parkersburg News and Sentinel (WV) July 25, 2010PARKERSBURG - A Belpre veteran has filed a wrongful death suit for his son and has applied for medical benefits from Veterans Affairs for health problems he believes were caused by contaminated water at Camp Lejeune, a Marine base in eastern North Carolina.
Norman Allen, 54, was stationed at Camp Lejeune with his wife, Carolyn, from 1976 to 1977, during the 30-year span when the base's family housing water supply was tainted with toxic chemicals that may be the culprit behind various health problems and several forms of cancer in veterans and their families who lived there, according to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.
Allen blames the polluted water for the death of his son, Michael Anthony, who died 45 minutes after being born in August 1977. Allen said he suffers from health problems, including short-term memory loss, kidney problems and rashes.
