Navy urged to dump soil disposal plan for Naval Air Station
Partially contaminated dirt would be placed in West Gate Landfill

Pembroke - A plan by the Navy to place some partially contaminated soil 
at the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station into a landfill on the 
base got a cool reception from residents who attended a recent 
Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) meeting.

"We are looking at a cost effective way to manage this soil," said David 
Barney, a coordinator for the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) 
program and a RAB co-chairman.

He said that placing the soil in the West Gate Landfill under a cap 
approved by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency would avoid having 
unnecessary truck traffic on Route 18.
