Feds grant $3.2 million to restore Umunhum

The Amah Mutsun Indians joined open space advocates and politicians Friday for a celebration on top of a mountain that, despite playing a prominent role in their tribal creation story, has been off-limits for decades.

Representatives of the tribe sang songs and told their creation story in honor of the fact that Mount Umunhum, the "resting place of the hummingbird," will once again be open to the public.

A $3.2 million federal grant will be used to clean up toxic lead paint and asbestos and begin the process of removing a decrepit Air Force base on top of the spectacular 44-acre peak just south of Los Gatos.

The idea is to restore the 3,486-foot mountaintop to its former glory by 2013 and provide public access to the sweeping, 360-degree view of Monterey Bay, San Francisco Bay, Mount Diablo and the Santa Clara Valley.
