Thomas McLaughlin of Hampden got cancer from exposure to contaminated
drinking water while in Marines, VA rules
Patrick Johnson Springfield Republican (MA) June 12, 2010The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs recently ruled in favor of a Hampden resident's claim that his kidney cancer resulted from exposure to contaminated drinking water more than 40 years ago while stationed with the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
The ruling makes Thomas McLaughlin, 68, a self-employed plumbing contractor, among just a handful of people so far to be compensated for illness due to exposure to known carcinogens in the base water supply.
...The Boston regional office of the Department of Veterans Affairs in March ruled McLaughlin's exposure during two separate deployments to the base in the late 1950s and early 1960s "more likely than not caused your kidney cancer."
