Wells open after decade-long closureWater: Agency shows new plant; treated water to be dumped into Santa Clara River deemed drinkable
By Natalie Everett Santa Clarita Signal (CA) May 19, 2010The Castaic Lake Water Agency on Thursday took dozens of VIPs on a tour of its new perchlorate treatment facility, which treats water from two wells that had been shut for more than a decade.
The wells, named Saugus 1 and Saugus 2, pump 2,200 gallons of water per minute. They restarted May 3 after closing in 1997, when officials discovered perchlorate contamination on a large property known as Whittaker-Bermite.
The toxin, which can damage the thyroid, leaked into the soil and groundwater under the Santa Clarita Valley as companies built rockets and explosives there for decades.
The $5 million treatment facility is located near Bouquet Canyon and Newhall Ranch roads. Water travels from the wells - located near the Magic Mountain Parkway and Railroad Avenue intersection southeast of the 996-acre Whittaker-Bermite property - to the facility.
