Surveys turn up cannon and two pieces of fused ordnance at Fort Monroe By David Macaulay Newport News Daily Press (VA) March 21, 2010HAMPTON - While the discovery of a cannon dating from the 1860s sticking vertically in the ground was the most significant find during a munitions survey last year at Fort Monroe, many other items were uncovered.
During 165 hours of research, a team dug up 2,313 metal targets, including two pieces of fused ordnance: an 8-inch-long parrot shell and a 10-inch cannon ball.
Other finds included a Chevy truck tailgate, three door knobs, four horse shoes, a potato masher and a pair of scissors.
Robert Reali, an environmental coordinator with the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission, called BRAC, said a geophysical survey was made using giant metal detectors.
