Report largely clears bomb testing site by Amanda Matthews Patterson Irrigator (CA) March 18, 2010A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers inspection of the surface soil at a former bombing practice field used by the military in the 1940s has revealed that debris from explosions there still exist, but that the risk of them hurting someone is very low.
...The Patterson site was used for only a few years after the Crows Landing Naval Auxiliary Air Station bought it for dive-bombing target practice in 1943. Soon enough, the U.S. Navy could see that the grassy hills, which became dry tinder in summer, created a fire hazard - not the best place to set off ammunitions explosions.
After the site's closure in 1946, the Navy dug a pit and buried the bombing debris that had been left behind.
