Marsh Run Park soccer fields in Fairview Township might be reopened in 3 years
(Harrisburg) Patriot-News (PA) February 22, 2010Back in 1976, it must have seemed like a really good deal to Fairview Township officials - 14 acres of land, perfect for soccer fields, sold to the township by the New Cumberland Army Depot, for only a dollar.
But today, 34 years later, a locked chain-link fence surrounds the property at the far eastern edge of the Army's Defense Distribution Center in Fairview Township.
No one has played soccer at Marsh Run Park since it was closed by the township in August of 1987. In 1985, as part of a Department of Defense investigation of formerly used defense sites, preliminary testing revealed possible chemical contamination of soil and groundwater.
After almost 20 years of testing and remediating chemical contamination by the Army Corps of Engineers, the fence could come down, and the township could get its soccer fields back in three years.
