Bel Marin Keys residents remain leery of plan to clean up toxic soil

Soil contaminated with lead, dioxin, petroleum and other dangerous chemicals will be stockpiled farther from Bel Marin Keys homes than previously thought.

About 90,000 cubic yards of soil will be stored temporarily about a mile south of the Bel Marin Keys homes until it can be determined how much of it is so toxic that it needs to be hauled away to a hazardous waste landfill. The soil cleanup is part of an $11 million U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project to convert the former Hamilton Air Force Base's rifle range and skeet shooting area, a 270-acre parcel known as the North Antenna Field, into wetlands.
