Navy base cleanup's status unclearEight of 12 contaminated sites have been finished. A meeting in March will address the situation.
By RICH PIETRAS Bucks County Courier Times (PA) January 18, 2010After the military is finished cleaning up the Willow Grove Naval Air Station property, one of Pennsylvania's 29 Superfund sites, it will be suitable for commercial or industrial use.
That would likely have been fine under Gov. Ed Rendell's plan to convert the base into a Homeland Security facility with some private, commercial tenants.
But since Rendell has backed out of his plan, the nearly 850 acres that could become available for redevelopment is open for a variety of uses, including recreational or residential.
Whether the military will be required to return and further clean the land to meet those kinds of uses is unclear.
