'Interim measures' called for on Grumman plume BY MICHAEL WHITE Riverhead News-Review (NY) November 5, 2009Residents are set to ask U.S. Navy officials tonight to install a temporary pump-and-treat system to head off any contaminated groundwater flowing toward the Peconic River from the former Grumman jet plant in Calverton.
"While we understand it's going to take some time to come up with a permanent solution, we feel strongly it would be prudent on the Navy's part to take some sort of interim action ... before it moves closer to the river," said Bill Gunther, community co-chairman of the Restoration Advisory Board.
By "it" Mr. Gunther meant a large plume of volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, which are known to have harmful effects on human health and wildlife.
