Bibb is close to buying more land as Robins buffer BY THOMAS L. DAY Macon Telegraph (GA) September 6, 2009Bibb County officials claim they are close to purchasing about a dozen properties in the south portion of the county, the latest development in a long-term effort to protect the northern approaches of Robins Air Force Base from encroachment.
A collection of interests - the Bibb County Commission, the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce and a handful of ad hoc economic development organizations - have cooperated to purchase properties through the Central Georgia Joint Development Authority, which helps coordinate development across Bibb, Crawford, Jones, Monroe and Twiggs counties. Chip Cherry, president and CEO of the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce, estimated that the sales could go through as early as an "October time frame." He estimated the sales could total about $1 million.
Proponents of the purchases have argued that clearing the area north of Robins is necessary to prevent noise injuries among residents. They have also argued that the Department of Defense will frown on "obstructions" of the air field the next time the issue of Base Realignment and Closure arises.
