State buys land to buffer Whiting Field Dusty Ricketts Northwest Florida Daily News June 9, 2009MILTON - The state of Florida has purchased 1,390 acres near Whiting Field to protect the naval air station from encroachment.
Gov. Charlie Crist and his Cabinet on Tuesday finalized the purchase from the Nature Conservancy for $5.1 million. The Navy is funding more than $1.27 million, or 25 percent of the sale.
"The land will be used as a buffer around the air base," said Sterling Ivey, a spokesman for Crist's office. "There will also be some recreational use with the land."
The purchase also includes 622 acres on the western edge of the property designated for off-road vehicles.
To date, the state has invested more than $900 million to acquire more than half a million acres around military bases, including 27,000 acres near Eglin Air Force Base in Okaloosa and Walton counties, according to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
