Search For Army Base Site An Unnecessary Battle Editorial Hartford Courant (CT) April 15, 2009The Army Corps of Engineers finally acceded to good sense and the wishes of local and state officials in its choice of a site for a new Armed Forces Reserve Center in Middletown. The Army announced this week that its preferred location for the new facility is Cucia Park, a 40-acre site near I-91 that is owned by the city and zoned for industrial use.
Gov. M. Jodi Rell called the selection a "big victory." What remains troubling is that there was even a battle. The process to find this site was a fiasco.
The new training center is needed because several facilities around the state are being closed per the 2005 recommendations of the Base Realignment and Closure Commission. Someone - it's never been clear who - wrote into the commission's law that the location of the new center would be Middletown, if a suitable site could be found.
