Cleanup intensifies at Prairie Trail

Monitoring wells have been dug, and trees and other debris will soon be cleared at the site.

Additional tests on soil and water are under way and trees and other debris are being cleared at the former lagoon and landfill at the Prairie Trail development in Ankeny.

Environmental cleanup of the 38-acre lagoon and landfill site will be a major step forward in plans for the 1,031-acre development, located on part of the former Des Moines Ordnance Plant that later was an Iowa State University research farm.

The lagoon and landfill were used first by the Army as part of its munitions plant there during World War II and later by John Deere and the city of Ankeny.
