EAST FALMOUTH - Soldiers at Camp Edwards will soon feel the sting of simulated munitions.

The state's Environmental Management Commission, which oversees environmental issues in the protected area of the base, unanimously approved the so-called simunitions at a meeting yesterday.

The bullets, which leave either a red or blue dot that's smaller than the splat of a paintball and feel like a bee sting, will give soldiers more realistic training, Michael Ciaranca, deputy director of the National Guard's Environmental & Readiness Center, said yesterday.

The wax-tipped bullets, which are encased in aluminum, contain a small amount of lead in the primer, Mark Begley, executive director of the commission, said.
