Many at meeting protest the new Presidio plan

A plan to scale back a contemporary art museum and a lodge proposed for the historic Main Post of the Presidio did little to appease critics who packed a public meeting Tuesday night to object to the development.

"This is not an appropriate use of the Main Post," said Whitney Hall, who served as commandant of the Presidio, the former U.S. Army base, from 1979 to 1982 and is past president of the Presidio Historical Association.

Hall is affiliated with a coalition of neighborhood, environmental and preservationist groups opposed to a proposal by Gap founder Donald Fisher and his wife, Doris, to build a museum for their vast collection of 20th and 21st century art in the heart of the Presidio, which is now a national park.

The saga of Donald Fisher's quest to build a museum in the Presidio took quite a turn last week: Park officials said they want the museum to be reduced in size and moved a block from Fisher's desired site, and the Gap founder indicated he's willing to give it a try.

But if Fisher and the Presidio Trust really want to shake things up, they'll bury the whole museum underground. Or split it into pieces sprinkled throughout the Presidio's 1,491 acres. Or wrap the whole thing in an invisibility shield.

These are among the ideas on display in a playful, provocative exhibition at the 3A Gallery on San Francisco's South Park. Ten of our most creative architectural firms are displaying their own schemes for the Contemporary Art Museum at the Presidio that the Fisher family wants to build and endow.
