Dec. 9 public hearing planned on next phase in Hillsborough depot plan

The Township Committee has approved the next step for the redevelopment 
plan for the General Services-Belle Mead Depot, introducing an ordinance 
to transform the depot into a park and recreation area, with portions of 
the property zoned for research and development.

The redevelopment plan is necessary for the township to apply for a 
state brownfields grant to clean up the environmentally compromised 
property. The plan addressesg low levels of surface soil contamination 
caused by railroad ballast, and oil used to control dust on the site. 
Officials want to begin that work this year.

The depot was an Army warehouse facility through the Vietnam War. During 
World War II, the facility was used as a camp for captured members of 
the Italian military. The property was then turned over to the General 
Services Administration and was used until its closure in 1991
