News Release US Forest Service Los Padres National Forest October 6, 2008Forest Service Issues Safety Advisory for Dry Canyon in Ventura County, Site of WWII-Era Artillery Range
Los Padres National Forest officials are posting a safety advisory in the Dry Canyon area of northern Ventura County warning the public about the possible presence of unexploded military ordnance. Located north of Lockwood Valley Road and east of Highway 33, Dry Canyon was the site of a World War II era artillery training range. A recent examination by an Army contractor, as part of a nationwide survey of Formerly Used Defense Sites, observed fragments of exploded ordnance.
According to Mt. Pinos District Ranger Tom Kuekes, the situation in Dry Canyon does not warrant closing the area to public entry, but he wants forest visitors to be aware and exercise caution.
