Debate nearly kills Reserve site plan FRANK JULIANO Connecticut Post August 5, 2008MILFORD - A plan to build new Health Department offices and apartments for seniors on a 2-acre U.S. Army Reserve site here was nearly shot down Monday night by the Board of Aldermen over concerns about the eventual cost.
Board members after more than two hours of sometimes heated debate narrowly rejected a motion to send the matter back to the local redevelopment agency that presented the proposal. The Base Realignment and Closure Commission has set a Sept. 4 deadline to receive the city's plan for the Seemans Lane property, now a vehicle maintenance facility. The aldermen voted 8-6 against asking the redevelopment agency to seek an extension of the deadline.
The board then approved the concept of putting the health department on the first floor with as many as 100 subsidized apartments for seniors. Some aldermen were concerned about a proposal they felt was too vague while others fretted that missing the deadline could mean that Army officials would turn to private developers, taking control away from the city.
