Beechtree Golf Course owner to revamp site into housing development

Harford County's Beechtree Golf Course will close its doors at the end of 2008, paving the way for 735 new homes in anticipation of the Department of Defense's Base Realignment and Closure program.

Beechtree, which opened 10 years ago in Aberdeen, has often been ranked as one of the top public golf courses in Maryland.

The 300-acre property is owned by Timonium's James F. Knott Realty Group.

Executives with the company filed plans last year with Harford County to redevelop the land for 735 townhomes and single-family residences.

Bob Hamilton, chief operating officer for James F. Knott, said the anticipated relocation of thousands of military jobs to Aberdeen Proving Grounds (APG) in the next several years drove the company's urge to redevelop the golf course.
