Residents learn about buffers program at Fort Pickett

LAWRENCEVILLE - An information session was held recently at Southside Virginia Community College for residents of the Red Oak District to provide information about the Army Compatible Use Buffer. Landowners can voluntarily participate in the program to provide buffers around Fort Pickett protecting natural habitats, open space and working lands.

CPT. James C. Shaver, Jr., environmental officer with the Virginia National Guard, presided over the meeting stressing that participation in the program is voluntary but once the land is included in the ACUB program, the decision is irreversible.

"The program helps to achieve conservation objectives and supports the soldier's ability to 'train as they fight' through partnerships with public and private organizations, as well as willing landowners in nearby communities," stated Shaver.
