Skeptics call for detailed study of NIH proposal

Members of a local watchdog group want a scientifically valid risk assessment of the government's plans to send biodefense lab workers from Fort Detrick to Bethesda in cases where they may have been exposed to fatal diseases.

The National Institutes of Health is preparing to study the environmental effects of the proposal, and took public comment Tuesday night on how broad that study should be.

Individuals can continue to submit written comments until Aug. 8.

Frederick Citizens for Biolab Safety members Beth Willis and Barry Kissin both asked NIH to consider a study the National Academy of Sciences did last year of the risk assessment for a NIH biodefense lab in Boston.
