Army Corps Chooses 88-Acre Site In Middletown For Training Base By JOSH KOVNER Hartford Courant (CT) June 11, 2008MIDDLETOWN - The Army Corps of Engineers said Tuesday it has chosen an 88-acre site at Middle Street and Boardman Lane in the city's Westfield section to build a huge regional training base for Army Reserve and Connecticut National Guard soldiers.
That was good news to residents and preservationists who wanted to keep the base out of the environmentally sensitive Maromas section of the city and a surprise to city officials, who had expected the corps to choose a site off River Road, near an existing power plant and another plant that is being constructed.
Mayor Sebastian Giuliano and Planner William Warner said Tuesday that the corps' choice of 218 Boardman Lane raises traffic concerns. They said they didn't want to see a heavy stream of military vehicles passing through a residential neighborhood.
