|Subject:||[CPEO-MEF] GLOBAL: U.S. Navy testing in Naples, Italy|
Navy nears goal for Naples pollution tests By Sandra Jontz Stars and Stripes European edition May 22, 2008 NAPLES, Italy - Knowing is half the battle for Taeko Yoshino. She uses bottled water at home to drink, cook and brew her coffee. But given a chance, she’ll open her house to have the tap water tested for possible pollutants.
"Just to know it’s safe," said Yoshino, who lives in an apartment in the Monteruscello suburb of Naples.
Yoshino is among those who responded to a Navy questionnaire seeking sites to begin an environmental testing program. The Navy initiated the testing because of concerns over uncollected trash, air pollution caused by burning trash, and possible soil contamination caused by illegal dumping.
Navy officials have mailed out 1,800 questionnaires to Naples-based residents who live off base - hoping that from the sampling, they will get enough responses to then test 130 homes that meet geographic and other testing criteria, said Lt. Cmdr. Wendy Snyder, a spokeswoman for Navy Region Europe.
