Joint land use study planned
Cities, military to plan jointly for future land use

The Department of Defense Office of Economic Adjustment is coming to 
town in early June to kick off a joint land use study serving White 
Sands Missile Range and Holloman and Cannon Air Force bases. Pentagon 
officials will visit with local leadership to explain the purpose and 
the process of the study.

Daniel Cass, community planner at Holloman Air Force Base, said the 
OEA's function is to aid communities around military installations to 
develop themselves. The OEA has developed a program to fund and guide 
local communities to work with their neighborhood military installations 
to plan for the future.

"Instead of incompatible land use, such as putting an elementary school 
at the end of a runway," Cass said. "It's laughable, but it happened in 
Tucson. The school sat in accident potential Zone 1."
