Appraiser estimates private land near Malmstrom runway worth $6.8 million

An appraiser hired to estimate the cost of buying private land on the 
north and south ends of the runway at Malmstrom Air Force Base told 
about two dozen people gathered Monday evening that the price tag could 
run as high as $6.8 million.

Malmstrom's runway closed in 1996 after the Air Force moved a refueling 
mission to Florida. The appraisal study looks at the cost to buy almost 
2,000 acres of private land or development rights on the property on 
either end of the runway to prevent encroachment. Some fear that if the 
private land is developed, it will jeopardize the possibility of gaining 
a new military mission that would utilize the runway.
