Land by base runway valued at $7 million

A new study projects the community would have to pay up to $6.8 million 
to buy private land near Malmstrom Air Force Base to keep the runway 
free of encroachment and available for any future flying missions.

The same study, by Ferro Appraisal Services of Great Falls, estimates it 
would cost about $4.1 million to buy development rights, which would 
allow landowners to farm the land, but not build homes or businesses.

Local government and business leaders discussed the report Friday. They 
plan to hold an informational forum soon and, later, city and county 
hearings.

The goal is to gauge public sentiment and try to reach a community 
consensus within a month on whether to launch an effort to raise money 
to buy the property.
