Air Force rechecks polluted wells By George Brennan Cape Cod times March 5, 2008 FALMOUTH - Letters are being sent to 600 property owners to determine whether private wells from a polluted water supply are being used to water gardens or fill swimming pools. In the coming weeks, all property owners in the Ashumet Valley will receive a form requesting information about wells on their land, Douglas Karson, spokesman for the Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment (AFCEE), said yesterday. "This entire area that's part of the survey is supplied by the public water supply system," he said. "This is an extra measure of precaution to make sure no one is exposed to groundwater contamination in that area." A plume contaminated by solvents once used at the Massachusetts Military Reservation was detected flowing into East Falmouth in the 1980s. Since then, the Air Force has been working to clean it up and has paid to replace all private wells with municipal water service, Karson said. ...
