The results of a soil test in Runkle Canyon have come back clean,
without worry of health hazards, because only low levels of strontium 90
were found, according to the developer that hopes to build on the site
south of Simi Valley.

"It shows the property is safe for residential development," said Keith
Jajko, Runkle Canyon LLC spokesman.

Runkle Canyon abuts the former Santa Susana Field Laboratory, where a
1959 nuclear reactor meltdown and subsequent contamination are being
linked to hundreds of cancer cases in the area, a recent independent
study said.

SR-90 is a radioactive isotope that has been linked to certain cancers
and a cause for worry among residents and city officials, who pushed for
the additional soil testing. Results from testing the site four years
ago had shown much higher levels of SR-90.
