Subject: [CPEO-MEF] Rocky Mountain Arsenal (CO) Lewisite
Arsenal to start neutralizing wartime chemical

Officials at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal will begin work tomorrow to
neutralize a blistering agent discovered during a trench excavation Oct.
31 and investigate the source of the World War I-era chemical agent.

The lewisite, manufactured at the arsenal until 1943, was detected
during excavation at the Lime Basin, a restricted area. At the time, no
workers showed symptoms of exposure to the agent, and according to a
press release, air-monitoring samples taken since the initial discovery
haven't detected any new lewisite.

During the investigation, which is expected to last about four days,
crews will spray a neutralizing chemical throughout the worksite to
suppress the agent in the soil.
