AIKEN - Military units could be training at Savannah River Site within a year, pending environmental impact studies.

The Army approached the Energy Department about a year ago about using portions of the 310-square-mile site for battlefield training and non-live-fire training, Energy Department spokeswoman Julie Petersen said.

Training missions would include the Army, Navy and Air Force Special Operation Forces airborne and heliborne training operations.

Army units would conduct simulated combat operations similar to those on today's battlefields. Light infantry units from company to brigade combat teams - up to 4,000 soldiers - would conduct training.
