Fort Ord controlled burn planned Areas are near two former artillery ranges By LARRY PARSONS Monterey Herald (CA) October 31, 2007Almost 300 acres of Fort Ord scrubland are slated to be put to the torch in the Army's ongoing cleanup of unexploded shells, grenades and other explosives on former base firing ranges.
The so-called "prescribed burns" are used to clear brush so workers can more safely scour the terrain for potentially dangerous explosives.
Army base reuse officials announced plans this week to use fire to clear two areas near the southwest corner of the base's old heavy artillery ranges. The proposed burn areas form a curved section of land near South Boundary Road and Gen. Jim Moore Boulevard.
The adjacent areas were picked for two reasons: their thick brush poses a wildfire threat, and their proximity to former Army land where the city of Del Rey Oaks plans to build homes, a hotel, golf course and business park.
